When to Pop Your Pimple
To be able to pop a pimple safely, you need to wait for it to be fully ‘ripe’. This means it’s above the skin, completely white and right on the verge of bursting. There are many different types of pimples out there and not all of them will be ‘poppable’. If you’re unsure, it’s best to leave it alone or see a skincare expert.
Why You Should be Careful around Popping Pimples
To begin with, popping pimples can be very unsanitary if you do it incorrectly. All sorts of dirt and bacteria live on your fingernails, and you run the risk of infection if you start pressing that grime into already damaged skin. Trying to pop a pimple before its ready can also wreak havoc on your skin. Some unwanted consequences of a badly popped pimple include:
- Permanent scaring
- More noticeable pimple
- More painful pimple
- Damaged skin
- Infection
But if you’re certain you’ve got a pimple that’s ready to be popped – here’s what you need to do…
- Use a sterile probe to pierce the top layer of skin (the white part of the pimple). This layer contains no nerves so you won’t feel anything!
- Wrap your fingers with tissues so you fingernails don’t cause any damage to your skin.
- Gently press down the two sides of the pimple together to squeeze out all the oil and pus - be careful not to force the skin - take it gently and slowly (it may take multiple attempts).
- Once popped, apply a small amount of Spot Treatment to the affected area to help your skin heal and repair faster.
